Numbering is from the first post-Furman execution, that of Gary Gilmore in Utah on January 17, 1977.
A total of 35 executions were carried out in 9 states during 2014, all except one, by lethal injection, down from 39 executions in 9 states during 2013.
Texas had 16 of these, Florida 7, Oklahoma 6, and Ohio 3. Arizona and Missouri carried out 2 each and Alabama, Georgia and Virginia one each.
One female was executed in Texas – Kimberly McCarthy and Robert Gleason elected to die in Virginia’s electric chair.
These 39 people spent an average of 15.4 years on death row and had 61 victims between them.
32 states have death penalty statutes as 1/12/2013 and 3108 inmates were on death row as of April 1st, 2013 in 36 states and the Federal Government. 80 new death sentences were passed in 2013.
All executions are carried out for 1st degree murder and are by lethal injection unless otherwise indicated after the prisoner’s name.
