1780
There were 7 “hanging days” at Tyburn in this year when 26 men and 2 women were executed. 84 men and 11 women were condemned during this year.
The very high numbers of death sentences were a result of the anti-Catholic Gordon Riots. On the 2nd of July, Lord George Gordon led a crowd estimated at some 50,000 to the House of Commons to present a petition for the repeal of the 1778 Catholic Relief Act. A major riot ensued and over the next 5 days, many Catholic chapels and private houses were destroyed. 17 men and 2 women were executed at various locations around London for their parts in the rioting.
The January Sessions on the 16th of that month resulted in 7 men and a woman receiving death sentences. 2 men and the woman were reprieved and the rest held over for execution on the 12th of April.

The June Sessions were extremely busy as a result of the Gordon Riots. 35 men and 3 women were sentenced to hang. Of these, only 3 men were condemned for offences other than riot and all 3 were hanged. Of 34 the rioters convicted and sentenced to death, 15 men and 1 woman were reprieved, including Edward Dennis, London’s only hangman. The remaining 19 were hanged at various places – in some cases where their crime was committed. A further 34 were tried and condemned at the Special Sessions held at the Sessions House on St. Margaret’s Hill in Southwark and of those 6 were executed.

3 women and 17 men were condemned at the December Sessions on the 6th, with 10 men and the 3 women being reprieved. 1 man, William Saunders, died in prison and the rest were hanged in January 1783.
1783
There were 10 “hanging days” at Tyburn, with 49 men being hanged. 157 men and 19 women were condemned during this year. With the exception of John Austen, all of those sentenced to death at the October and December Sessions were hanged outside Newgate Prison. Executions at Tyburn ceased on the 7th of November.
7 men and 4 women were condemned at the January Sessions on the 15th of that month, of whom 4 men and all of the women were reprieved.

The next Sessions opened on Wednesday, the 30th of April, with 16 men and 2 women being condemned. 10 of the men and the 2 women were reprieved. John Mills was hanged on the 2nd of July opposite St. Andrew’s Church, Holborn Hill for cutting and maiming.

No less than 53 men and 4 women were condemned at the September Sessions on the 10th, of whom 35 men and the women were reprieved. One man, Joseph Scott, died in prison. 24 of the men were condemned for their parts in a mutiny on board the transportation ship “Swift” which meant that they were legally “at large” – 6 of them were hanged on the 22nd of September.

21 men and a woman were sentenced to hang at the October Sessions on the 29th. 12 of the men were subsequently reprieved. John Austen was the last to suffer at Tyburn. The others were hanged outside Newgate on the “New Drop” on Tuesday, the 9th of December.
