Numbering is from the first post-Furman execution, that of Gary Gilmore in Utah on January 17, 1977.
18 men were executed in 6 states during 2022, up from 16 men executed in 5 states during 2021. All died by lethal injection.
Texas and Oklahoma each carried out 5 executions, Alabama 2, Arizona 3, Missouri 2, Mississippi 1. Just 20 new death sentences were passed in 2022.
2,414 inmates were on death row as of July 2022, including 50 women and those sentenced by the US military and the Federal Government.
All executions are carried out for 1st degree murder and are by lethal injection unless otherwise indicated after the prisoner’s name.
